My bachelor GT has been courting a Vieja melanura for a long while but the melanura has been ignoring him. But yesterday, I noticed the melanura responded by darkening in color, dropping the reproductive tube, and paring with the horny GT. But I don’t think they will be able to make babies, because there is no known cross between CA and SA. Moreover, I don’t think the melanura can lay eggs because it appears to be a male as the reproductive tube is too small to be an egg tube. So it is a hopeless pairing and the GT will just get more frustrated.

This is what the melanuras looks like before responding.

Haha Poor horny green terror. My big boy GT does the thing to the midas in my tank. Nice looking GT by the way.

Appears territorial, and not a mating ritual to me. Nice looking green terror by the way! How big is he?

Also, I should have mentioned that I meant at least from these videos. In these videos, the green terror does not follow the other fish in pursuit. He appears to be fine once the other fish leaves his territory. Again, at least from observing these particular videos. :)

It just dawned on me that I hope I am not coming off as offensive man. I am just expressing my observations. I think you have awesome fish! How big is the tank that the green terror is in out of curiosity? Sorry if I came off as offensive because that is not my intent. :)

The head shaking movement is a courtship behavior. But courtship involves territorial protection for the right to breed, so it is also territorial. The tank is only 75 gal, and both fish are around 7 inch. The GT is about 2 year old raised from egg. The territorial display is all ritual with no injury to any fish. The GT shows more aggression towards the melanura when it is not responding, and ignores little tankmates. The pairing has broken off, as the melanura has lost interest. The GT is back to single.

I actually have a couple female GTs from the same batch kept in another tank, but I don't want to breed them for the moment so they will grow faster. His father has a huge hump, and this young GT still has more weight to put on.
