I had 40+ guppy fry in a 10 gallon tank. Tank parameters are perfect, and yet I have lost more then 20 of them in a week. I keep checking the water and feed them 3 times a day. There were 5 silver molly fry in there and I have 4 left. I can't understand why these guys are dropping like this. I moved them from another tank (5 hex) that was too hard to maintain the water parameters in. I fished out 2 this morning, and found 2 more this evening.

Is this normal for livebearer fry? I am so frustrated. In one day, I found 8 that had been hiding and were dead.

The temperature is 80 and I have added 2 tablespoons of salt before the last 15% water change. There are no visible signs of ick or anything like that, although more then a few of them have little clamped fins. Any help is appreciated.

Large amounts always die in evry batch but with fry u need to do like 10%-20% WC evryday and feed em alot

The water params are - no ammonia - no nitrites - 10 to 15 nitrates or so. Everything is great as far as water.

As for how inbred they are, I can't really say. These are new fish to me, and obviously were pregnant before coming here. I am not sure if they are all from the same mom, or if there were 2 moms. I actually believe they are from 2 moms, as one batch seemed to have a lot of black on their tails, while the others were a bit smaller and no black.

they were probably inbred...this normally happens with inbred fry IME. how often do you do a w/c? there might be a parasite in your tank that is effecting all of your fish.

I have been doing wc's about every 2 days. Should I bump it up to once a day? It is hard to do a gravel clean with the babies in there. They keep wanting to get into the cleaner.

are there any objects in the tank that might leach things in the water? could there be residue from cleaning chemicals or anything? did you check the temperature to make sure the heater didnt malfunction?

Chances are pretty high that your having an inbreeding problem, the clamped fins you mention would indicate this to me.

I've had guppies from the LFS give me bad fry for 3 batchs straight... once I get them changed over to a new male they give me great fry.
