i had the idea of dividing generations of my con fry in my 25g last month but ran into a problem really quick. there is space around the divider, mere millimetres that the youngest fry can squeak past but not the bigger ones. the smaller ones went to the other side and got eaten by the bigger ones. any advice on how to plug up the sides? i dont want to silicone it in place incase i change up the division of the tank.
thanks.

hmmm good ? im expecting fry soon so i would like to know as well.

Ive used java moss to clog holes up in the past. It's not 100% effective but it works and it's natural. Hard to find tank safe stuff you can wad up to fill a hole with. I had my yellow lab groups which Id wanted seperate for genetic purity when I bred them sneak past my divider and these guys were over an inch long, definetely super frustrating when despite your best efforts the fish still find a way to mess it up :p.

i only have najas grass (guppy grass) that i can use but the stems are really brittle and hard to line along the edges of the divider.

I've used stock LFS dividers succefully to raise really small, sometimes newly hatched fry with sucess. You have to put both arms into the tank and tweak both sides of the trim simultaneously so that they are flush to the tank wall. If you have a barebottom tank, you'll def need to put something like filter fluff, or gravel etc. at the bottom of the divider. I just pile up some gravel on each side to stabilize the whole thing.

my problem is more the sides not the bottom. and the divider i have was made by my dad, made out of plastic. using plants to clog the holes works but its hard to keep them in place.

Maybe rig something up that clips the divider to the top rim of the tank (one on each side). Store bought dividers have that feature and it helps alot in keeping things in place so that gaps don't form.

i was thinking sticking cotton but its kind of ugly.

Mate you've got a plastic divider in your tank, it's ugly anyway :p

I suggest getting some packaging foam or anything that you think would be safe, washing it thoroughly, and packing that in the gaps.
