When I get fry is it ok to have a standard filter (Aquaclear 20g filter is what is in there) in the tank or is a sponge filter a must?

Right now I have a piece of nylon covering mine right now. (classy!) I have to clean it daily but when I do a lot of the crud stuck on it just goes back into the tank. Do you think a prefilter would the debris in a bit better?

Sponge filters are great for fry tanks. They are very easy to clean and can easily be transferred into a stocked tank when you do not have fry in the fry tank (this will keep the filter “cycled”).

Small HOBs can work too, but the fry will get sucked into the intake. This can be avoided by using a prefilter of some sorts. Several filter manufacturers make them, this is a round sponge with a hole cut in the center. You simply slip it over the intake tube and this disperses the flow enough so the fry will not get trapped to the sponge.

You can make your own out of a sponge. Or you could do something like Mlowe22 did. This will prevent the fry from getting sucked up but like he/she said, they get clogged very quickly.

For a simple fry tank, I suggest a sponge filter, but if you have the small HOB laying around I couldn’t blame you for at least trying it first.

sponge are nicer for new born fry due to gentler water current and it gives them a food source when ever they are hungry not just at feeding times u never have to worry about sucking them up and are easier to clean without replacements every month and so on.... imo sponge fileters are the best way but as was said either will do the job

completely agree, hob's are a pain in the butt you need a prefilter and it puts alot of current in the tank for small fry
sponges do a good job in keeping tank clear and is usually a constant food source for fish
