Just needed some info/confirmation on setting up a fry tank...never done it before...but I have a pair of jewel cichlids that breed every other week, since october, and not a single fry has made it past 3-4 days.

The jewels are in a 75 with an oscar...so I'm thinking that's the problem right there.

I was thinking something simple like this:

10 gallon aquarium
small heater
sponge filter w/powerhead
bare bottom

Would that be appropriate for jewel fry?

yes that sounds right, but if you have a 20L I would use that instead. Same set up but more space and you can have the parents in there.

How big is the O? Pics?

Not sure what the point would be in placing parents in a tank that's going to be placed in the cabinet beneath the 75...just looking for something to raise the fry in. I was thinking I'd wait for the eggs to hatch and then remove the fry to the grow-out tank.

I've never had any fish breed for me, and I've never raised any fry...so excuse my ignorance if I'm missing something here.

The Oscar is about 5"...still very young.

I was saying put them in the tank to breed because cichlids are good parents! Jewels are really nice cichlids but can be pretty nasty so I don't know how they treat the oscar.

The jewels definitely chase the oscar away, but haven't done any damage to him over the past few month above and beyond a torn fin here and there. No bites out of his sides or anything major like that.

So, its not possible to leave the parents in the larger tank, and remove the fry once they hatch and raise them on their own? I'm not sure what the fry are going to eat if they stay in the larger tank...

IMO your best bet would be to move everything into the smaller tank (parents and fry) and then let the parents rear the fry for a few weeks then add the parents back into the main tank.

Mods, please move this to Breeding

I would get the fry into the smaller tank. I move my convict fry after 4 days and feed them ground up flake food. I you are more interested in watching the parenting behavior of your jewels, I would move them into a 20 galon long or a 29 gallon. Your jewels will learn to be good parents this way and you will turn out more fry.

Oh and per your original question, you got it but I would go with a top and light too If ya can. If you use a pwerhead instead of air pump just make sure there isn't to much current(you'll know if there is to much once you put the fry in)

Good luck and enjoy

Put in some breeding grass for the fry to hide in, it seems to make them more comfortable even if you have good parents.
