I had about 2 dozen fry in a 5 gallon grow out. They grow for the first couple of weeks in this and then go into a 10 gallon. I just fished out 6 fry that were dead. I checked the tank params and the ammonia was high. Is this because the filter had a net over it? Am I feeding too much? I try and feed them a small amount 3 times a day and switch between fry liquid and fry first bites. I sometimes add some drop vitamins.
I did an immediate water change (do it once or twice a week at 25%)

I set up a new 10 gallon nursery. It has the entire filter system that I keep constantly running in another tank to keep the bacteria in the filter. I also added bio spira to it yesterday. Is it safe to move these guys to the 10 gallon? I will be moving their plants to the 10 as well. Right now, I have 3 white clouds in there to get it going, but didn't know if I could move fry there because the filter has been running in the other tank for about 2 1/2 months and the other tank is long cycled. I figured the bio would help it along. If I can move them, I will do it immediately.

I was growing fry out in small tanks also for awhile. I was having to do daily water changes because power feeding fry make alot of poop. Plus roting dead fry don't help. You could get some white diamond or whatever it's called to help keep the ammonia in check.

I keep hydro sponge filters going in tanks also and will just toss a cycled filter into a 10g and call it good shorty after it has been in the tank for maybe a day. Make sure to use declor before adding the cycled filter into the new tank also.

Notice the sponge filter in the back ground. I've had very good luck using those!!

Prolly. I bought a case of them off Aqua bid once. They are dirt cheap. Like 3 bucks each or something. I'm sure any LFS should them r something like them. You don't need much of a sponge size wise for a 5 or 10 gal tank. Keep in mind you will have to cycle the filter so keep your current filter going for the time being.

This white diamond stuff. I put a small amount ( about 1 cup) in a sock and toss it in the tank also.

Marineland White Diamond Ammonia-Neutralizing Crystals is ideal for all freshwater aquariums and ponds. White Diamond removes up to 4 times more deadly ammonia to keep water clean and fish-safe. It protects against sudden ammonia "spikes" and helps control the presence of ammonia...especially during the break-in period. Shipping weight: 1 1/4 lbs.

I have these ammonia pillows and have one in the filter where it indicated to put it. If that doesn't work, they say you can put it directly into the tank. I just checked mine and replaced it with another new pillow and am recharging the old ones. I will check into the white diamond though. It sounds easier.

I will definitely leave in the other filter until the sponge one settles. I will have to get out tomorrow and get it. I am anal about having extra filters running to keep the bacteria in them. It helped considerably when my 29 gallon tank cracked and I had to move everyone.
