I have a 20g tank that has an overflow (drains to sump) in the bottom. Right now the "intake" is an open 3/4" piece of PVC.

I want to use the tank for growing out fry.

The simplest way would be to cut a hole in a piece of Aquaclear or similar foam and rubberband it on the overflow.

Any other ideas? Will this work?

you'll have to end up rubber banding it on some way! but that doesnt mean that the small fry wont just get sucked onto the sponge and stay there until they die! putting a sponge just keeps them form going down the tube but they can still get sucked onto the spnge

to remedy this u'll either have to turn the sump off, or put them in there when they are an inch or half inch when they can swim against the current but a sponge/ screen would still be needed! the only filter really recommended for fry is a sponge filter!

so grow them out in there until they are old enough to swim against then rubberband a sponge/screen on when they are bigger and turn it on then!or a very very lil current
