well cali is closer to asia.. hence better asian fish

From what i've researched on, Arapaima are from the Amazon basin. But yah we do get the better asian fish =P, the kind i like. Population in california is high, so more stores, more wholesalers, more buyers, hence more rare fish for good prices.

i forgot to add... i think they breed gigas over there also.... i see them in LFS over here also... but they are always cheaper in cali
