Hey you all. I am planning a collecting trip to Iquitos Peru. Any and all fishes that you collect will be shipped back to LAX (unless you have an import permit and then you can pay shipping to your airport). You pay your portion of the shipping costs. If shipping to LAX, only fish LEGAL IN CALIFORNIA will be shipped (that means no piranha or stingrays unless you ship them to yourself....as I am a college professor, I will not have fish shipped under my name that are illegal). Any proceeds from the trip will be donated to a brand new research institute in Iquitos devoted to the sustainable breeding of amazonian ornamental fishes. The cost of the trip is approx $950 which will include your hotel cost (a three star hotel...if you want first class accommodations that can be arranged but your cost will go up dramatically), your in country transportation, some food.

The date of the trip will be 25 September - 1 October.

Please e-mail me at ichthyology@yahoo.com for more info.

i would love to go and do this and ship some nice fish back to nyc hymm i just may do this

I wonder how hard it would be to get fish back to Chicago. No import permit or account with an airline.... Hmmm.

Sweet idea - how much would airfare be???

I purchased my ticket to Iquitos from LAX on LAN for $750.00

Import may work this way...(Now, we would have to work on this)....import to LAX with as a group, then ship to you via some airlines. There would probably be some cost involved..... Or, you are legally allowed to bring in 6 fish without a permit.. maybe 6 stingrays?????

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Universities were able to bring in certain species of fish that are considered "illegal" for educational research/study purposes.

Universities do not have "blanket" privileges. I would have to apply and pay for a special import permit (not cheap), show actual research purposes for a "banned" species and then pay a yearly fee (not cheap either) to keep that species. Once the research is completed, I then must release the species to the USFWS.

I've always wanted to do something like this! Trying to convince the wife as we speak...
