On the outside it is indistinguishable from the Florida gar but if you indeed caught it up north, it must be the true spotted, as you state.

It's pretty rare to see the spotted gar species in the hobby and trade. 99.99% of them or more are all Florida.

Only way to actually tell difference between true spotted and Florida gar is inside the mouth cavity. The true spotted will have a scale like cavity where the Florida will not. And Yes most sold at LFS and places will try and pass off a Florida gar as a spotted gar. Spotted and Florida will look exactly identical some times on the outside. I personally took a trip up to Canada to vist a fish enthusiast. Some might know him from his YouTube channels. And He knew where to find true wild spotted gars.
