How would you do it? The trick is to set up an aquarium that does it all by itself with as little maintenance as possible so that all you have to do is enjoy watching your fish.

(Hiring someone, or going to the beach / lake / friend's house / fish store / museum, etc. is against the rules.)

It can be done. but you would have to go with a bare bottom to avoid gravel cleaning, you would have to change any prefilters from time to time and re-fill the feeder when needed.

you could have a auto-water change system
auto water top-off
auto-feeder
and go with a wet/dry or sump so you would only have minimal maintainence for cleaning the filter.

or you could go with a a complete flow threw system where treated water enters one end of the tank and waste water exits the other end on a continuous basis so that the entire volume of the tank is changed every hour or less.

100% automatic I believe is impossible but extreme low maintanace is attainable for a price. if you used a drip system with an overflow tied into a drain then you would have your water changes taken care of. there are several people on here who have run piping under the substrate with water jets tuned for the tank to essentially eliminate stuff settling on the bottom making it so you only have to gravel vac a couple times a year. setting up a chemical injector to deal with chlorine or chloromine is simple but to have accuracy is gonna be pricey. all the elements of a home test kit can be done with meters and hooked into a control panel this would also make it possible to have the computer control rate of water changes ph balancers ammonia spikes... I think it better be a true monster tank though before you go and drop the kinda cash it would require to save the small amount of time it takes each week to justify it.

ive seen a WICKED nice setup. its on a thread on alberta aquatica. on an arro tank, full water changes, topoffs, and a gas heater too, this thing is CRAZY! if you can find the thread its well worth the search
