So Cal
Heya, Female FH are generally smaller then males fully grown ? I've heard something about this yet i have no personal experience.

Thanks much.

I would have asked the hybrid guys, They stop here too though....

Au gong fong and mayahsun (sorry spelling) Are IMPO the resident F.H. pros.....They frequent the hybrid section.

Well i've seen a lot of random questions... Lots of different answers, so I want to know what you guys feel are a more comprehensive answer for the general keeping of FH... I see many people say they prefer water at 79-80 Degrees... Then i read they like 82+ degress, i read Females get to 9" and males to 14" I also read they both can reach 18" (For some strains) and some up to 20"...

All these random and conflicted opinions are really confusing i've looked at many forums and IM hoping to get a few questions answered.

Size: Male and Female ? What are the max size for Male and Female.
Temperature: Where do they really like it? High 70s Low 80s Or mid-high 80s ?
Tank size: I've read Males require 75g, but females can live happy in a 55g ?
Food: What really brings out their colors for you? is it related to environment?
Environment: What do they like in their tanks? Driftwood, Medium sized Gravel? What color Gravel and does gravel color impact the Fish's color?
Training: I've seen some video's of them enjoying being pet... others of them trying to rip their keepers hand off... Can they be trained to be more viscous or personable ?
Filtration: What kind of filtration is really needed here? I've heard again all answers... Medium, Heavy and really heavy required.. What do you all think?
Water flow: I've also read these fish enjoy a nice flow of water from a strong Powerhead, is this true?

These are all generic questions but i've been looking into these guys lately and I think i've heard more bickering and conflicted opinions and answers then keeping any other type of fish.

Thank you very much for reading.

Thanks, i put up a series of questions in a rather long post... I've been looking into these guys and the answers are more conflicted for FH then i've seen in the keeping of any fish... From Temperature, food, light, water conditions, aquariums Decor and of course, the size of the fish... I've read some strains can reach upwards of 20"

So, honestly the more i "learn" the more confused im getting :irked:

It feels that way at first....Then you will realize, what "we" do, is us. Your setup will be different than ours. Mine will be diff, and so on. You should use us, and this site to "pick" as many brains as you can, and form your own method....Good luck with the F.H's I will be in the same boat soon, as I am getting some nandopsis haitensis, and a couple other fish! I have never kept black nasties, and I am starting to get butterflies.....Can you keep a secret?......I am getting a pair of wild caught Nicaraguan nigrofasciatis.....I feel like a beginner again. I have thousands of cons, but never wild caught!!:headbang2 :headbang2

It's best to put temp at 80-86.
The are just like other cichlids besides the festaes. Males grow bigger and prettier than females. They reach a average max size of a midas. Some may get a bit bigger due to strain. I know of a female at 12". But most females arent that big because ppl don't try to put size on them. They get very mean when breeding and need a male twice the size or bigger that's why. I had a 8" female and she was whoopin all the bigger males ass; without being in breeding mode.

Personalities depend on the fish. It has very little with training. They just need getting used to to be petted. Just touch them when you feed them.

They are just like most other cichlids but more courageous and meaner. Also need advanced care for beauty and head hump maintenance. Water flow and environment is up to you to make them feel comfy. Whatever is best for your fish. As for filtering, just like for any fish. They like their water clean. The cleaner the better. So you figure that out.
