After my last NTT group went belly up on me, i was hesitant to get new ones. It was my blood parrot that kill the group. Now that my RTG moved to the bigger tank with my parrot i bought a new group of NTT (5) for my smaller tank. The group is not stable yet. Still a bit antsy with movement around the tank.

Now one has the same problem as my last group. The mowhawk is growing fungus and pop eyes. Another is having some red dots around it's eyes. It's also experiencing pop eyes. I've treat the tank with Pimafix. Has anyone experience this problem? Is it contagious? Will post pic. soon. Thanks

This is why Blood Parrot cichlids are evil and ugly

Don't worry about them being stable.... They either will be or they won't.

Sounds like you were sold a sick batch ..... Or : bacterial infection, injury or water quality may have caused it. sound like wq, if the others are showing symptoms. Sounds like fungus is setting in too.....

Keep an eye, if they start fighting, the sick one might lose the eye completley.

I'd do large daily water changes, say 40% for 3 days, then use marycin or similar to kill of any bacteria (your choice for meds, personally I just rely on wc's and minimal feeding for 7 days)
Do NOT overfeed and do not add any more fish.

Binox w. W/C every two days and re-dose. Worked for me in the past with a group of ATs.

it was getting worse so i decided to dose it in saltwater for a couple second so it wouldn't infect the others. It was swimming fine after but this morning i found it at the bottom of the tank :(.......

That salt shock probably finished it off... Popeye is not an infectious disease. But the bacteria that may have caused it can spread.
It's probably already spread days ago.
Hope the others r ok.

But I notice it took you less than 48 hrs to do something that no one advised u to do under this thread. I recommend you go get some marycin or binox.

Hmm.. as far as i know NTT are salt sensitive. Can somebody confirmed this?

No.... All tigers can tolerate a bit a salt. Lots of members add salt to main tank To cure itch.... But a taking a fish out and submerging in saltwater is a massive shock to system.

Dragonfish... Is this what u did? If not , apologies for assuming so. Jut thought that from your post.

Ade- yes, that's what i did but only after i try Pima and Melafix. I didn't want the fungus to spread. Another one fallowed it yesterday. i have 3 now. All other fish ( baby loach, angle, baby peacock bass and ray) are fine. My water parameter are all fine. I do 25% water change this morning. temp at 87 PH around 7.5. This is a bare bottom tank with a couple of volcanic rock. i have 2 eheim filter running 1canister and a pro2. I believed it's a bad batch that's already infected when i got it.

I would say try lowering the temp a bit to 80-82...higher temps will let bacterial and fungus grow. just go easy on the meds if you use them and make sure your using the right meds for the right illness or it is just pointless to use meds. IMO, tigers are scaless which makes them prone to ick also. more than likely your tank already had ick in it and when you added the new NTT they were stressed and more than likely stress triggered the ick along with the 87 temp. Keep in mind they are tropical fish but 87 is a bit extreme IMO.

I would have just used Ick meds instead of melafix or pimafix. and just like you if you start one med on yourself stick to it and finish it cuz if you stop using it before it can take effect you might not see the results you wanna see. dont mix meds and did you remove your carbon? salt doesnt always help and it depends on which salt you are using. some dont realize that salt does not evaporate and continuing to add salt does not cure any illness but causes more stress. so be mind full when using salt on freshwater fish..

as for the fungus, no meds will cure it as you have high temps and will eventually come back along with poor water quality. if your experience fungus, are you overfeeding and not taking out any leftover food? IMO doing a massive w/c everyday for the next week and lower temp and that should help. you say you did 25% wc after heavy dosing of meds? IMO it could have been the pimafex and melafix that put an end to your fish as i have heard that overdosing can cause suffocation. point being is you are stressing your fish out even more than they are stressed right now.

if your going to treat them, i would do it in a smaller tank not your big tank.

i personally do 90% WC every 3rd day which is 2 times a week and sometimes 3. temps are 80-82 and a bit brackish. lots of tanins from driftwood and almond and banana leaves. low lighting with bare bottom tank painted black. my NTT, IT, NGT's are always stable and plenty of hiding places and surface plants. they like their water looking like a tea color....

hope this helps but i am no expert. but i must say that i have never had problems with low temps and huge WC regime. IMO thats the 2 keys to maintaining healthy fish...

GL and dont give up,
