I noticed this damage or fungus on a rainbowfish Wed after being gone for a day and a half. Did big water change on Sunday night. I regularly do 85% water changes at least once a week. Tank seemed fine other than my pleco I had since 95 dying back in Oct.

I got new fish last week but they are in QT and I make sure not to touch that water before touching the display.

I worried it might be a fungus or bacterial infection but in the past I was overly cautious and quarantined a rainbow that just had scale damage from running into stuff. Rainbows do that a lot.

Now I'm worried bc a Dority rainbow died Thursday and I noticed a red mark on a female Dority that I didn't notice before.

Size of tank? 125g

2. Water parameters
a. Ammonia? 0 with tetra test strip
b. Nitrite? 0
c. Nitrate? 10 aprox
d. pH, KH and GH? KH looks like 80, GH 300, 6.8 ph
e. Test kit? Aquarium coop test strip

3. Temperature? 77F

4. FW (fresh water) or BW (brackish)? FW

5. How long the aquarium has been set up?
Since late 90s
6. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them? 7 clownloaches and about 14 rainbowfish that have been in there since 2018

7. Were the fish placed under quarantine period (minus the first batch from the point wherein the tank is ready to accommodate the inhabitants)?

8. a. Any live plants? Fake plants? Fake plants
b. Sand, gravel, barebottom? Gravel
c. Rocks, woods, fancy decors? Any hollow decors? Small driftwood and lava rocks

9. a. Filtration? Aquaclear 120, old Whisper, hot magnum, intake sponges
b. Heater? Heaters are unplugged as tank stays above 77.

10. a. Lighting schedule? What lights are used?
b. Any sunlight exposure? How long?
Lights 230-1030. Shop led light

11. a. Water change schedule?
b. Volume of water changed? 85% plus
c. Well water, tap water, RO water? Lake Michigan tap
d. Water conditioner used? Safe. Used stress cost bc I saw damage
e. Frequency of gravel/sand (if any) vacuumed? Every week

12. Foods? NLS and northfin
How often are they fed? 5-6 a week.

13. a. Any abnormal signs/symptoms?
b. Appearance of poop? Seems normal
c. Appearance of gills? Seems normal

14. a. Have you treated your fish ahead of diagnosis?
b. What meds were used?

15. Insert photos of fish in question and full tank shot if necessary.

I just took those two out and put them in quarantine with 1 tablespoon salt per 2.5 gallons. I should have done that when I first noticed that longer rainbow didn't look right.

I had to take one of my sponges out to filter that extra tank but display should be fine without it. I did a water change last night but may just do another one in the main tank.

Edit:
So whatever was on his back, damaged scale or whatever fell off as I was transferring him.

Could be fungus. Would cont with salt and water changes. If not better then consider api fungus cure. Repost/update if things get worse.

The male rainbow seems fine. Like can't see anything wrong with him right now. As I said, during the process of transferring him over whatever was stuck to his dorsal area came off.

I took another pic of the female. I guess the only thing that seemed odd with her was that mark on her fin. Doesn't look red now, just a mark, so I guess that's good. I probably wouldn't have even moved them if that Dority hadn't died. Could have just been a coincidence.

This female also has some slight damage on her tail fin, but that is from being caught with the net.

One thing I don't like is that this tank is under the quarantine tank so anything wrong with them could accidentally drop to this tank below but I try to be careful and have the gap on list covered with towels when I do water changes on top tank.

QT fish are fine except for one Dority that gas damaged lips. Treating that with salt. I know rainbows get this from bumping into stuff and I've seen this rainbow bump into other names as these both get too aggressive with trying to gobble up sinking pellets.

Any ideas on what red mark could. E on this female rainbow?

These two are still in quarantine with 2 tablespoons per gallon salt. The male has no marks or any fungus looking stuff on him.

This red mark doesn't seem to be changing for better or worse.

Could this just have been her running into driftwood or kaca rock?

More pics that I just took.

Do you guys think I can put these two back in? Posted on another forum and someone did think it could be that the fish in question bumped or rubbed against something. Fish with red mark looks same. The other one looks the same since whatever it was in its back came off during the move to QT.

I found this thread on another forum where some goldfish had red marks that they thought were from running into decor.

Fish seem fine other than that they are still skittish in this tank. I keep front covered bc otherwise they just stay at the bottom. The male one ran into the glass yesterday when I was shining flashlight on phone to get a better look.

I stopped the salt about two weeks ago I think. If they were sick, I imagine they would have gotten worse by now?

Any comments? Thanks.

I just decided to put them back. I think it's just damage from running into something. Mark still remains the same. I think the male got a damaged swim bladder from me transferring him over or from running into the sides of the tank, which I saw him several times when I would try to get a close look at them.

I suspected this bc he stayed at bottom of the tank (still upright though) and swam sort of diagonally oriented up. It was obvious when I put him in display so I put him back in QT.

Im trying putting Epson salt treatment but my experience in the past is that these swim bladder problems usually don't fix themselves. I did have on praecox that seemed to have a swim bladder issue that lived a year. Swim bladder for better but she swam a little diagonal but was able to eat and live for awhile.

Im gonna keep a close eye on this female that I out back everyday but she seems fine so far.

I don’t know what the red thing is. However, it seems completely different and unrelated to what the other fish had on the dorsal fin. For the latter, it looked like some kind of injury that became secondarily infected with fungus. What thev

….sorry.
What the original issue was on the first fish is now impossible to tell. It seems as if your maintenance routines are top notch.

Yeah I dunno. As I said, I initially thought it had just rubbed against an artificial plant and had some scum on it. When it was still there two days later, that's when I decided to act. Weird that it fell off during transfer and there was no damage in that area that might have had fungus.

Maybe it did have an infection and that's why it's swim bladder is messed up. The female with the red mark didn't seem to get affected.

I do water changes every 5-7 days and the nitrates are never more than 10 when I test.

I also thought maybe the one Dority that died around the same time maybe was from feeding too much. Right before any of this happened, I thought the tank loles.frear and rainbows were good size but now I'm making sure to do two fasting days a week.
