I have this stringy white growth that I beleive is causing infections to slightly wounded cichlids. The godmani pictured had a small abrasion on his head last night and now he looks like that. 2 weeks back my festae had the same problem- small cut on her mouth and 2 days later she died.
I do a 50% waterchange every 5-8 days my nitrates rarely exceed 40ppm.
I have 6 "fancy plecos" in the tank so the keep that in mind with the meds.

Sounds like Columnaris bacteria:

Usually has to do with water issues.

Can use: Maracyn, Fungus Clear, Hydrogen Peroxide, Potassium Permanganate (choose your poison!).

Try salt...works very well at 1tbl per 5 gallons.
