Hi Everyone,

I've kept 90g, 45g and 30g salt and freshwater aquariums with a great success but this is my first experience with freshwater planted tank. At first i was so excited but now it's fading away... :confused:

It's been 2 weeks since I've started my freshwater live planted tank - i have few live plants including two banana plants but i can see white fungus accumulating on one of them. I've tried to clean it couple of times but it develops within a day or two, also did a water change but no change. Could not get any help using google and one of the aquatic store referred me to this site as there are many experienced people who can help. (please help)

I have following;

- 55g Tank
- Flourite Substrate (about 2" thick - first bottom layer)
- Flourite Fine gravel (about 1 and half inch thick - second bottom layer)
- Filstar (aka XP Rena 4) with ceramic rings, carbon and filter pads
- 2 X 40W Life-Glow
- 1 X 40W Flora-Glow
- Fluval E-200W Heater
- Last night I've also introduced DIY CO2 just to check if that helps before I can busy the full blown version of CO2 System.

I'm going to attach a picture of the fungus for you to have a look at it.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

How long has the tank been setup?

But if it were my tank i would just rub off the mold like substance...

It's been 2 weeks since I've setup this tank and I've already tried rubbing it off but the problem is the fungus kills the part where it attacks - As soon as i touch the part to clean, that part comes off of the plant it's kills the area where ever it develops.

Thats weird... i mean i have seen similar fuzzy stuff growing on driftwood newly placed into a tank, as well as sometimes seeing it grow on the anubias when first setup my planted tank... just never remembered it doing damage per se, normally i would wipe it off and ignore it and the plants didn't seem worst for wear... then after a few months it just disappeared all together and never came back...

That's normal, it's just decomposing the dead organic matter. That root must have been damaged a bit. Leave it alone, it should be self-limiting.

To get a planted tank going quickly, you need to plant it very heavily, or algae will out compete the plants for nutrients. You can use inexpensive bunch plants, that don't need rooting or adjustment time like the banana plants do, the banana or crypts sometimes die back only to reappear after a replanting or change in environment
Your setup looks sparsely planted, you need a lot of plants to suck up nutrients or algae will be the winner.

Thank you all - finally some relief, appreciate your input.
I'll get an algae eating fish this weekend.

The problem where i live is shortage of live plants there are pet stores but they do not carry a large quantity of live plants - i've been through them to order the plants i needed but they never get what i've asked for.

Couple of more questions;
- Can you suggest a place i can order live plants online?
- How much flow do i need in my tank? Does adding up a Nano Koralia will help or do i need more circulation in 55g.

Thanks!

You could try rosey barbs. Theyll eat anything, and dont look bad. Ive even seen them clean filter inlets full of algae.Maybe a couple would work well.
For ordering plants, just go on line.
