This question is inspired by “my aro tank set up” thread, the tank is outstanding IMHO.
Here in Thailand I never see any furniture or plants of any kind.
Now I am going to set up a tank soon, and I was thinking of small stones coving the bottom and a few pieces of wood in there. Not plants though because my past experience with plants in tanks are all negative.
I’ve been told the reason why Thais have no tank furniture is because the arowana can rub against it while swimming or bump into it while hunting feed and loose or damage scales.
But on this site I see lots of furniture, what are your thoughts on this, bare tanks are boring, except for the fish of course. But I wouldn’t want to risk hurting my yet to be arowana.

I dont see a problem with sand or any other things in the tank aslong as it space so he can swim and turn.. And why should it be difrent to have a aro in the tank from anyother fish? A koij might alson swim into a rock or so. I never seen an empty tank here in sweden... I think it looks poo if u ask me but its all up to the owner.

Yeah, I learned from my mistakes with having Bogwood and twigs in the tank with an Arow.
I believe what is best is to have at least 1/2 the tank height clear of anything hard that the arow could bash against. apart from that decorate how you like.
others may have differing opinions

^please explain the mistakes you learned, did th fish keep hitting the stuff high up in the tank?

You;re talking about deco. Actually they're partially right about aros injuring themselves in there. Another issue is these deco can trap dirt and waste. And deco take up precious space in the tank if your tank is not that big.

i just try to imitate nature as close as possible.

it would freak out if it got startled and bash into the bogwood in the tank(as i had it stacked up to the water line), and sometimes when turning on the lights in the morning.

i don't see why not arl has a nice sharp DIY back round and he has like 6-8 asians and they loos a few scales but they heal and learn :)
