My wife wakes me up and says there is ice on the top of the tank. I am like WTF ice? I said even if the heaters failed its like 80 outside its not ice. I asked are the fish alive? she said yes, so I get some clothes on and go to look. Before I get to the tank I hear the familiar sound of a pump sucking in air.

So I walk to the back of the tank and see the tank was full to the top, a leaf fell and plugged up one drain. after fixing that I walk to the front of the tank, to see what she was talking about. It was the top of the tank looking at it though the water the acrylic looks a little like ice.

Luckily it was only a minor over flow like 5 or 10 gallons. The sheet rock still looks dry and unharmed, I only see a small puddle on the floor, but this is why its in the basement; no harm no foul.

OK, why do you have leaves in the basement?

I have 1/4 of the top of the tank covered in plants. Their roots hang into the water, this way I can have a lot of vegetable matter without taking up tank space. I am just looking for the right amount to help battle nitrate; I am so tired of seeing 40ppm.

I am sure the nitrates must be in good control with the help from plants. I am planning something like that in near future. Can you upload any photos of your setup. Thanks,
