Fuse beads for a filter media?

Do you think they would be safe? I am just going to put them in nylon pantyhose and put them in my hob
I am just worried about the fuse beads leaching harmful chemicals into he water

If it is these things pictured, I can't see them have much surface area. They would probably be safe though.

yes that is what they are, i am going to put them in a small bucket with rocks and shake it up until they are rough and hopefully hav more surface area

would this sponge for a sponge filter cut up into small peices work out better?

Yup. Best of all would have been leaving the sponge filter intact. But those beads have absolutely no surface area. Why not use some of the cheap bio max pellets that come with the aqua clear filters? Its got 20X the surface area and its like 10 bucks for a bag of them.

Also cascade makes bio rings (Ceramic rings) that actually are 10 bucks a box

what would lead you to say they have no surface area?
