A little place called C At Hell
Hey guys,

Wanted to see if anyone else has had this issue with small bass.

I feed my group of orino once a day, normally at night. They get a variety of food sticks, broken massivore, and frozen krill.

However sometimes they simply don't get excited about the food. Is it because I may not be following the routine that they are used too?

There are other times when they will hit the floating sticks so hard they bang off the top glass.

Could it be that because they are the only aggressive eaters in the tank, that the competition isn't there for them? (There's 6 4-5" orino, so I'm not sure if this would be the case.)

Its kind of sad when the speckled silver dollars hit the pellets more consistently than the bass.

Would it be possible that the turbulence on the top of the water is too great for them to make out the foodsticks? (Maxijet1200 powerhead w/ airhose)

I'm not worried about them starving, but getting them to be consistent with their eating would be great!

Maybe your feeding to much to often?

I could be giving them too much, but I know some guys on here feed 2-3 times a day when they are powerfeeding.

Could the issue be that I'm dumping the food instead of taunting them with single pellets? They do get a lot more excited when the massivore and foodsticks clatter off the glass.

I experience the same thing from time to time, especially when I dump in too many pellets at one time. That's usually if I'm in a rush to feed them. I normally try to throw in 7 to 10 pellets at a time for my 4 juvie cichla from about 2 or 3 feet away, kind of bouncing them off the glass lid into the tank. That really gets them to hit the pellets hard and make a big splash!

Thanks for the feedback, sabmakj.

I'll see if taunting them with the clatter of the pellets more. I know some people may say to starve them to get a more excited reaction, but I just lost one to unknown causes and don't want to test the limits of the fish right now.

When they were only two inches long, they would go crazy a nasty pellet paste formula I'd make. I would freeze the food paste, and carve little chunks off of it before putting the chunks into the turbulence of the powerhead.

Maybe I need to go back to this method and see how they react.

Keep feeding how you are....pellets.
keep to a routine...time etc. Try feeding a small meal in the morning....like a 1/4 of their normal. Think 3-4 sticks per bass.
Then feed heavier at night.

How often are you doing wc's?
Whats the temp at?

WC are 40-50% once a week.
Temp is 86

I'll stick to the routine I have now, and add a small feeding in the morning. They prefer pellets over krill, and its just odd that they don't have the consistent gusto that I hear about from others members.
