I have been in the aquarium game for about a year now, and I think that I have a good general sense of what to do and what not to do. However, I still know that there is still much to learn.

Today at my lfs there was a now hiring sign, and it has always been a dream of mine to own or even work at one. So I quickly jumped on the opportunity and filled out an application. I even introduced myself to the staff and owner just hoping that they would remember me when it came to choosing the right individual to hire.

Considering that this lfs is pretty credible and well informed on their products and fish keeping, I have been doing extra research on freshwater and marine tanks hoping I could set my self apart from the rest of the candidates. I know there are several lfs employees and managers that frequent the MFK boards, so I am asking what would you look for when hiring a new employee? Also, if anyone had any tips on what I should research more? Any info at all would greatly be appreciated.

I have been through plenty of interveiws and many might think I might be making a big deal out of this simple job interview, However, like I mentioned before owning my own tropical fish store has always been a dream of mine. And finally being hired by one would be a great step in that direction

Thanks again

Oh i'm a little ways away from there so i dont know it but if i ever find myself there i'll stop by and say hi. GL at your new job. Get some pics of the stock!

When my LFS hired me, i knew i was a shoe in. Walking in with confidence in a decent set of clothes. My application in a folder so it wouldnt get creased. I had written a 10 page paper about the fish in general and have been around them all my life. They brought me in the nest day for my first day.

its all about confidence, and attitude. A firm handshake, and looking decent.

yep exactly also come across passonate about fish you do sound like you are so make sure they know it.

Just be confident in your answers. Smile, sit up, and look them in the eyes when your answering. And if it's a Yes or No question...say Yes or No...not yeah or nah. I've actually denied people for answering my questions like that.

Or you could get some really good references: Like maybe a bunch of potential MFK customers. Or maybe someone on here knows the shop already.
I think the very fact you started this thread shows the passion you have. And if by chance you get denied, don't give up. And don't expect the pay to be "awesome" either. Reputable shops you are referring to are better off having friendly, passionate staff on their side. One customer lost is many future repeated sales. The sale always larger than "right now". Good luck on the job, sir.

my first job was at a lfs near my house and my resume got me hired because i already knew about fish..

The jobs I have had working for numerous different LFS, I have never really applied. What I look for in an employee is someone that has a decent knowledge of fish, but more importantly is their attitude, passion, customer service, and determination.
