Hi, in the next coming months, i will be building a pond. This is going to be sorta long thread, so bear with me please! ***IMPORTANT***THIS IS NOT A LARGE POND, IT IS A NORMAL SIZED BACKYARD POND***IMPORTANT*** First off, i might as well say what i want to achieve with this pond. I want to achieve beauty, exoticness, and stock it with something no one else has. Trout. i live in NJ, and it gets pretty hot in the summer. I know this sounds cruel, but the guy told me to buy them in september and april, and they will die off because of the heat and cold. Seems cruel but hey what else can i do? i will also be stocking redbreast sunfish, and maybe some cool, exotic bass that i get from florida and missouri. Another second point of the pond is to breed some redbreasts.
The pond size is going to be 9 by 7 feet, or 756 gallons. I will have a 2' rim 16" deep around the edge for the redbreasts to breed. Than i will have it drop to 3' for the other fish. The deep part will be 3x5 feet. Here is the liner i am going to use: http://store.everything-ponds.com/premium-grade-rpe-pond-liner/ i really like the fact that it is 1/3 lighter than firestone, which makes it easier to carry. i admit that was a big concern for me when i was exploring pond liners.
You may be thinking, trout and bass in that small pond?!?!?!? Ha! That is the most overstocked pond ever. Well, the bass, which are redeye bas and shadow bass, are very small bass. And the trout, i will only stock a couple. So my stock is looking like:
-20 to 40 redbreasts
-3 to 4 bass
-3 to 4 trout
Reccomendations please i have never had a pond and do not know if this is overstocked or understocked!!!!
Now, on to another main purpose of the pond-breeding the redbreasts. I already have 5 sources of redbreasts, so i am covered. My main question is-will the trout and bass affect the sunfish breeding? e.g. eat the eggs, not let them breed? I dont care about if the fry get eaten, i just want to see them dig nests and breed like in nature. Is there any way i can achieve that?
Also, i want to have some pond lilies, and cattails, just wanted to point that out.
Last question-is there any thing i need besides a liner to make a pond? Obviously a filter, deicer, and all that stuff, but i need you guys to recommend the most effecient and best ones for my pond and what it is trying to do.
