I'm just getting back into keeping fish after a long break.
This time around I figured I should have some sort of focus on what I want to keep instead of oh that's a cool fish approach.

So it's Malawi Ciclids that I decided on.

Tank is a standard walmart special 55 gallon with the standard 48" lighting that comes with.
I've already twice upgraded the filter, first filter was a Tetra Whisperer that was anything but a whisper. Second upgrade is an AC110 which I got on saturday and already love it, going to get another one in two weeks.

I also have a powerhead in the tank can't remember what brand it's rated for moving 330 gph, and a stealth (sp?) heater, have to say it's the best heater I've ever bought.

Ok on to what I'm planning to keep. I'm think along the lines of:
Pseudotrpheus saulosi (1m:3f) amd Metriaclima esthera (1m:3f)

They're pretty fish and the big thing for me is you can tell the sexes apart. There no throw in 4 fish and praying you don't get 4 males beating the snot out of each other.

Actually Maggot the link you posted is where I got the list I posted.
I'm actually going for a show/breeding setup if that makes any sense. Basically if the fish do their thing, they do their thing. Tank is set up in my living room.

Breeding is definitely something I want to try to do, it gives the whole keeping fish a purpose and having that purpose will keep me interested in the tank.

I picked these two species because both the males and females are nice bright colors.

well it looks like you know what you want then haha.

Why Metriaclima esthera? I'm sure you could pick one of a hundred that would be a little smaller for the 55. I think the salousi are a good choice. Why not get something that is not blue or yellow to mix with the salousi.

Mike,

Metriaclima esthera, males typically are bright powder blue, females a rich orange.

Metriaclima estherae;)

yes it is, I was asking why those? They are much more common and more so more aggressive than other choices. When working with smaller space I thought you would go with a different fish. They also get a lot larger than other limiting space. SO why not look into something else in the mbuna family
