-SORRY FOR THE REPOST.., POSTED IT IN BOTTOM DWEELERS SECTION TOO

Im new to this forum....., ive kept rays in the past...., had a marbled motoro, retic..., and a humerosa -sp- like 3 or 4 years ago. since i was in college it was very dificult to be moving around from place to place with a 180 gallon tank. A long story short...., I had to give it up...., but recently i just got one of my 120 g. tanks going. Needless to say I just got back into the hobby and I am going to be purchasing a pair of rays very soon. i've been looking around for rays and ive noticed that alot has changedin the last 3-4 years. Obviously the brazilian ban on rays was kind of a shock...., (remember when leopoldi rays went for 250) As i've been researching I've been hearing that the US is going to be banning imports of rays in a year???????? IS THIS CORRECT??? what does this mean for the hobby??? im all for the ethical treatment of wildlife and respecting the enviroment to the fullest....., but if this is true..., who is to blame and more importantly why is this happening. Sorry if this has already been discussed (i didn't find much on the subject) thanks for any imput....., by the way this forum is wonderful.....:headbang2

the US enforces the laws of other countries with import/export laws and restrictions.

if Brazil bans all exports of its stingrays, that means it's illegal to import to the US as well.

however, rays are still being legally shipped out of other South American countries.

Thank GOD for captive ray breeding programs!:headbang2

Yeah, they're great for the rays, but not for the wallet, hahaha.

I understand that rays from brazil are not currently being imported/exported......, but i guess i was wondering if there is going to be any other banning of imports/exports from SA. (has anyone heard of this) Also was wondering why this ban on imports/exports from brazil is in place..., what happened???? will we ever get pearls and lepoldi's from brazil again???? and thanks for the info.....

the reason for me asking is because ive been out of the loop....., cus i havent kept rays in 3 years...., when did this ban happen???

Brazil ban took place about 1.5 years ago, go to red list .org. explaines all .
in about 10 months from now you will not be able to get any rays from S.A. at all. You can thank the government for that.
Sad..............

Is this defiently going to happen.....??? and how long do you think this might go on for..?? thats a real bummer......, i guess i got back into the hobby with just a little bit of time to spare.....

Have all the Amazonian ray species been bred in captivity? I'm all for conservation so the ban on importing is understandable... I just hope there is enough captive breeding going on to maintain these gorgeous rays in the hobby... especially if they are disappearing from the wild. How large of a tank is necessary to breed each species? I don't have the space now but I hope to some day. I would think a 6 foot by 2 foot base tank is barely enough for even the smallest species.

That's terrible. Any word on a Grandfather clause, or are they going to be outright illegal?
