anyone had luck with ghost shrimp fry in FW? i have 5 pregnant ghost shrimp and i was curious if i really need brackish water for any success with fry. thanks

It depends on which species you have. The common petstore ghost shrimp is Palaemonetes paludosus, which breeds just fine in full fresh water. Look carefully at your shrimp; P. paludosus will usually have an orange band at the base of each antenna, an orange 'cuff' on the second (longest) walking leg, and an orange spot at each corner of the "tail fin".

im pretty sure thats what i have. at least some of them have those markings. i cant see all of them now, but i will assume that they are that species for the sake of this post. also, i plan on seperating the fry from the adults as soon as the eggs grow some more. i heard you need to actually ween them off their mothers with food?

Yes. I breed ghost shrimp. It's very easy.

The thing is that the baby shrimp are born as larvae, not miniature adults. These larvae are basically helpless and get quickly eaten up by fish. So if you want to breed them successfully, you really need a separate tank for them. However, it is possible a few could survive in a very well cycled and thickly planted community tank.

By the way..... baby ghost shrimp eat greenwater, or any liquid fry food.

thx karma....... i have the pregnant mothers on their own with no fish. will the mothers eat their larvae?

I asked msjinxed and she told me that all ghost shrimp will eat fry shrimp, so much like many fish species, you need to seperate them from their mother asap

I guess Mommy shrimp is gonna have to meet my GSP's as soon as she lays, then... I'm not setting up another nano tank.
