FW Lionfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Actually, the best common name to use for them is butterfly goby, or waspfish.

Fish

That is what is normally referred to as a FW Lionfish/stonefish.

I have not owned one of the waspfish, but I want to. They are cool/pretty goby/grouper fish but you have to be careful around them because their sting is pretty nasty.

They eat mostly bloodworms, earth/red worms, sinking carnivore pellets and shrimp pellets, krill/prawn, anything meaty.

They don't get very big, about 2" tops. They stay near the bottom and/or will usually hide.

They are aggressive towards smaller fish, and cannot be housed with anything smaller than they are.

Yeah you're absolutely right.

Most of the time its hard for these predatory fish: i.e. stonefish/butterfly gobies/g. tile eels - are hard to get eating anything that isn't a live meal.

I only suggest getting them at your lfs as opposed to online.

Ask them what they're eating now, and see if you can get them to feed it or come back when it will be fed.

Thought I would add a couple of things here.
I have 2 of these waspfish in my brackish tank and they are awesome. They have as much character as a puffer does. They are always begging for food, I have had no problems getting them to eat. They obviously prefer live food especially River Shrimp they go mad for that. But mine are eating frozen mysis, brine and bloodworm.
I don't know what other fish you have in your tank but I have F8 puffers, orange chromides and knight gobies.
They are definately a fish worth getting IMO.

Thanks smudger72! I have a knight goby and some mudskippers. Sounds like they should get along fine with the waspfish I plan on getting. Are your fish very aggresive towards each other at all?

Not agressive at all. Tank is 240 litres.
Stocking is
4 x F8 puffers
2 x Orange chromides
3 x Knight Gobies
2 x Wasp Fish
1 x Green chromide

The orange chromides are the most aggressive in the tank believe it or not.

I've only seen those guys for sale once and it was 4 hours away. They don't get very big.
