A few days ago, I had a question about aquarium salt, prime, etc. I have another aquarium salt question. Here's my dilemma! On the API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT directions for Ammonia Test, under 'Testing Tips' the last sentence is "The Freshwater Ammonia Test Color Chart is the appropriate chart to use for testing freshwater aquariums to which salt has been added." Also under directions for Nitrate Test, under 'Testing Tips' mid-way through it says "The Freshwater Nitrate Test Color Chart is the appropriate chart to use for testing freshwater aquariums to which salt has been added". If aquarium salt doesn't really do much, or isn't needed unless your fish are ill, why is this in there? If we don't use the salt, are we really getting accurate readings with these chemical tests? Please explain to a noob who is now totally confused about whether or not to use aquarium salt. :D TIA. :D

I believe it's because the salt doesn't alter ammonia or nitrate readings. I have a test kit that is supposedly for saltwater, but I used it with no problems when setting up my FW systems.
Heck, even the ph test, which is for "high" ph readings in SW tanks, worked perfectly for my African Mbuna tank.
Personally, I've never used salt in any of my FW systems and have never had problems.
