I have a 220g standard tank and I've always wanted a FW ray to put in it. I recently moved and just set it back up. I used a very fine silica sand as a substrate for 2/3 of the bottom with a fine gravel in the remaining 1/3. First, I realize that it will be some time before I can even think about adding a ray, but I currently have a managuense, FH, Johanna pike, and a carpinte Texas (all juveniles, the largest being the pike @ 6"). I've read that rays do not do well with aggressive cichlids. Am I going to have a difficult time adding a ray or will a ray be able to bury itself in the sand for defense?

not with those cichlids... pikes like to kill rays...

That sucks. Looks like I'm gonna have to buy another tank!

sterilized play sand from the local hardware store worked great for me. just put it in a bucket first and let the heavy sand settle to the bottom, and poor off the light sand. it took a while but it worked well
