FW Stingrays added to CITES list??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I thought it was only out of certain countries like Brazil ... not all. I only have / look for captive bred so haven't paid much attention.

My LFS was told by their supplier that all F.W. Stingrays were added to C.I.T.E.S. list?? Has anyone else heard this? It doesn't sound right to me. Was just the Motoro added?

Well, you know how US law work, it's easier to ban all related species rather than only 1 species then people will "intent" to "mis-lable" to sneak in and make pile of gold on that.

If this is true then I wonder how it affects the many breeders of various ray species?

After reading more into it it seems that Motoro was the only ray on the possibly being added list. I cant find anymore info as to if it was or not.

C.I.T.E.S. is not US based.

It looks like the entire Family of FW rays (Potamotrygonidae) has been added to C.I.T.E.S. Appendix III:
Appendix III is a list of species included at the request of a Party that already regulates trade in the species and that needs the cooperation of other countries to prevent unsustainable or illegal exploitation (see Article II, paragraph 3, of the Convention). International trade in specimens of species listed in this Appendix is allowed only on presentation of the appropriate permits or certificates. (See Article V of the Convention).

CITES is administered by UNEP and is based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Being added to CITES III does not ban the international trade in the listed species. It only means that the numbers traded will be regulated so as to prevent significant population losses in affected regions.
