Ello,

So I have a 29gal that is freshwater, that I wish to make appear saltwater. Trying to get ideas for decorations and fish.

Right now its the tank in my pictures. I have 2 sengal bichir, 1 ropefish and 1 albino rainbow shark.

Thinking of other fish that look saltwater would be cichlids(already had), butterfly fish or bala sharks(had before), snails and large shrimp? Any other fish that won't be eaten? Loaches or non-brackish goby maybe? Have seen freshwater clams, anyone use them beofre for filtering/looks?

For decoration? Wondering whether changing to pebbles or sand or light colored gravel? Have seen fake coral, shells and sea anemones before.

Plants could be alive like jungle Val? MOre sea-weedy looking ones then that?

Would a bubbler make it more so?

My 16g Bumblebee Goby species tank causes a lot of people to think it's saltwater. The BBG's are very colorful, the sand is pure white and the stonework is honeycomb rock. Tricks a lot of noobs... heh.

Well the fish you have in it now are already going to outgrow it. I wouldn't recommend adding any more fish until your upgrade accordingly on what you want.

i agree ^

but if you want it to look saltwater get a blue background and really blue (20000k or actinic blue) lights

Everyone is already adult size and doing fine. 1 of the sengals and if I get the Bala(when adult) will be moved to the other larger tank once its inhabitants are more adult themselves.

Aren't bubmebee gobies brackish?

Just cause they look fine doesn't mean they are. Your tank is stocked not much you can do.

A full grown senegal shouldn't be kept in anything smaller than a 40g breeder let alone 2 with the rest of your stocking. I highly recommend you upgrade.

Fine, forget what I have fish I have right now. I am more interested in knowing what gives the appearance of SW without being SW.

The blue background is a good idea.

white sand, fake corals, etc.

but PLEASE dont do it lol. it looks soooooo bad :)

^ Agreed. It usually does look tacky and you can't fool a lot of people. Focus on the fish you already have and create and african biotope with your senegals and ropefish. You could add some congo tetras and an african butterfly fish. You would need a 55g set-up with some nice filtration to pull it off.
