I'm thinking about converting my FW tank to SW? Do I need to empty all the water out of the tank or partial change it or do a 100% change?

100% change. And it's best to go with RO water if you can. The bacteria you need will be different, so you're starting from scratch on the cycle.

Try to find my TFH article "From Fresh to Salt" in TFH last year (Tom Lorenz). Should help a lot.

Empty everything, clean it, and start over. All FW bacteria will die in SW. You will have to start with a new cycle, Brown Algae outbreak, then red slime algae, then your in business.

i always say dead bacteria etc. just jump starts the new cycle...

with a UV filter you'd only have to worry about free floating algea and such. anything that lives on a solid surface wont be effected. unless it's stupid enough to crawl in there

unless it has copper or high phospahtes sure

First and for most, what kind of salt tank are you going with? Fowlr, just fish, coral? If it is just fish of fowlr then it wouldn't matter too much, if coral start fresh. (FOWLR = Fish Only With Live Rock just in case anyone is not familur with that term)
