I use an fx5, a fluvial 304 and a fluvial u4 to filter my 175. I use sand as substrate and my fx5, not the other filters, keeps decreasing its output to neglible amounts in a weeks time. My question: is the fx5 more susceptible to sand clogging or is it a faulty filter?
The fx5 is brand new, it has happened 4 times and ia solved for a week everytime i take a part the filter andxhange media. Any solutions?

Thank you for your help and suggestions.

if sand somehow got sucked out, its possible is ur motor to propeller got sand particles, have u try clean the propeler/housing?
maybe put the intake a bit higher from the sand buttom?

What are you using as prefilter? I noticed when I used floss as a "polishing" type thing, it would clog with normal use, even without sand substrate.

I'd recommend moving the intake higher away from the sand as well. When you have sand, it should compact, and if you raise in intake, and prevent the outflow from kicking up the sand, then you wouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for the input.

Has anyone had similar problemswith the fx5?

I have 2 fx5s and they have always got sand in them when i clean them out but i have never had an issue with performance of the filter, i have had the fx5s 4.5 years now.

My oscar picks sand up and spits in the intakes quite often but still no problems with the impeller or anywhere else in the filter, the sand just sits on the bottom of the canister but its hard too clean the sand out because its very sticky.

What media are you using? Any sort of additional fine mech filter material clogs quickly in an FX5... which means it's doing its job, but they do clog and suffer reduced flow. If you're not running any additional mech in the baskets, I would check the impeller.
