Hey guys,

I want to run a 300 gallon freshwater tank (96" x 24" x 30"). Whats the best filtration for a tank this size. One Fluval FX5 or an adequate size wet/dry sump? What are the advantages of a sump vs. the FX5? I'm planning on getting a few arowanas for the tank. Thanks in advance for your help.

What are you planning on keeping in the aquarium? I use both a sump and an fx5 for my 360 gallon. If your aquarium is moderately or heavily stocked, you will need both.

I run a 125(5x2x20") sump with two mag 18s with spray bar returns. I also have a turbotwist UV inline with the fx5s return.

I'd go with a sump around 120 gallons with some filter socks and bio media. An fx5 is a good filter but when you get into the 250 plus gallon range it just doesn't have enough power to do a decent job alone.

Definitely a sump.
I run 2 fx5's on my 210 with just 2 Leo pups and it's not enough

I have an eheim 2262, two xp3's and cfs on my 360 with no issues at all. Its a matter of personal preference to be honest.
