Hope any one can advice... Got 2 fx5s running, never noticed any noise from both, until yesterday. I cleaned 1 of them out, and replaced all 6 mechanical sponges with new ones. I unscrewed the pump motor to clean the impellor and rinse put any trapped debris.

Put it all back together, turn on....... Now the pump unit is making tons of noise... Noticably.... It sounds like an industrial fridge freezer!!!!

The other on is almost silent.

Any ideas?? Starting to piss me off now... I'm pretty sure there is no debris in the pump.

Just sorted it. Dismantled it, n found 2 eheim substrate balls in the area near the impellor!
It's well quiet now. :-)

mine starts spitting air when it is time to clean it out, anybody else have this problem?

I just want to throw mine across the room from time to time.

No, really, I shouldn't be so anti-FX5. It's not healthy.

It's a great filter if you want to clean it continuously, deal with it purging air every 12 hours or whatever and freaking out your fish, and shutting down for days and deciding to work again.

LOL OP I'm glad you got it fixed.

Mine started to sound like a industrial fridge as well. I recently added carbon and I thought that maybe a carbon pellet made it's way to the pump. I took it all apart and cleaned it. It certainly was gunky. It is now silent as before. I think the key to this canister filter is to not let anything small like carbon pellets or another type of media escape from the basket.
