I was filling out my registration today for my "free" FX Gravel Vac, and I saw the cost of the filter bags, and the recommendation to switch them out after 2 uses. So I was wondering if anyone here has used one of these gadgets. Is it worthwhile compared to say the Python method? Are the filter bags really in need of replacment after 2 uses (meaning roughly $6 - $7 per cleaning)?

You can always clean the filter and reuse, of course they will recommended to change the filter after 2 use cause they want you to buy their product. It only work on certain size of gravel. It does somewhat help you remove some waste daily to keep water quality longer but at the end you still have to do water change. So, if you get it for free then why's not? you have nothing to lose there.

I wasn't planning on using the vac as a way to avoid water changes--I want to clean gravel followed by a back flush to drain water. It's just that the vac really isn't free, there's $12.99 for shipping and handling, plus another $12.99 for two filter bags. That seems kind of steep to try a free product, to find out how well it works, and if the bags become so clogged after a couple uses that they can't be used again I'll just stick with the Python.

If you have to pay then I would say no. It's not worth for the amount of money you paying but it's up to you though.

I'll be honest, I got a NEW fx6 that came with the "free" gravel vac, registered and found out shipping was like 20.00. Needless to say, I didn't send away for it. Would have been neet to have for free, but not going to invest in one.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing. The gravel vac would have been a sweet deal if actually free (especially on top of the Black Friday price on the FX6) but I'll apply the money to the Festvums I've been wanting to order.

Can make a vac with an airstone a plastic tube and a filter sock. drill a small hole in the side of the tube for airline and rubber band the filter sock to the back end.

same concept as a sponge filter realy the air flow creates lift water passes thru the sock and crap get stuck in it.
