I just setup a new 75 gallon and just finished installing a FX5. Due to limited space, the fish tank had to go into my bedroom, which is turning out to be a problem. The FX5 is running but is making a lot more noise than I expected. There are two noises it is making. One is related to what I suspect is some air bubbles in the cannister, and the other is just the motor itself. Despite what people say, when its silent at 2am you can hear the filter :)

I know there are plenty of threads on FX5 troubleshooting, so I will be looking into these. I had a couple other thoughts though on reducing the noise. I wanted to do the following:
1) Place a thick towel over the cannister to insulate the noise. My concern here is whether it will overheat the pump/motor
2) The tank is a rectangular tank, but is angled to a corner and the stand is backless. I was thinking of placing a back on the stand to close in the noise. Additionally, I was thinking I could insulate the walls of the stand with something.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!!!

have 4 running in my room i really dont hear them at night you mite want to just shake your fx5 a bit try get some more bubbles out.

I have 1 in my bedroom and it's silent. Did you tighten the lid properly the way the instructions say to?

I would check your setup of the filter. Mine may have had a slight hum, but that is about it. In my fish room, I had to put my hand on it to tell if it was running or not.

I've had a few issues with mine as well when it came to bubbles and the resulting noise. A few things help:
1) makes sure the top is screwed down nice and tight
2)make sure all the connections are tight on the intake and output lines. The rubber fittings are not the greatest for sealing up the intake piece to the filter tubing and i've had to wrap a rubberband around mine to get a good seal.

What's your substrate? The reason I ask is that I've found that a few grains of sand that work their way into the impeller can make an FX5 run noisy.

Thank you for your suggestions everyone. When I get home tonight I will double check everything. My substrate is actually gravel, so I don't think it is that. Thanks!!!
