So I just got my first fluval fx5. I have a 210 gallon tank bottom drilled with 3 bulkheads. I currently have 2 taken as an intake and return for my wet/dry sump. Can I possibly plumb my third bulkhead as the intake for my fx5 and then run the return over the tank? Also any advice on which media I should use for the three baskets. Thanks in advance

Yes you can. That is basically how I am plumbing my 300 right now.

Yes, that's how I have done all my tanks. Just make sure you have an additional ball valve or similar on the intake and return just in case you experience a problem with your filter in the future.

Guys,

I read the post above and was wondering if you had to do any creative plumbing, outside of the basic ball valves to isolate the hoses going to the filter removal, to allow the fx5 to work. I was pricing out a 210 set-up and keep getting conflicting information about the usage of a canister filter with a drilled tank. I like the fluval b/c I don't want to mess with a wet/dry setup. I appreciate the insight you guys can provide b/c it sounds like you have this system up and running.
Thanks,
Doug

I just bought a few 1" hose barbs to hook up to the FX5 lines and the bulkheads in the tank. Pretty simple really.

Oh. my lfs guy was telling me about the pressure being too much on the fx5 pump to be able to keep up with the flow that would be created with a bottom drilled tank. He can sell us either tank, but that was his point of contention against the drilled tank and using the fx5. We were discussing the idea of keeping the input and output rather low and hidden at opposite ends of the 210.
