So! I'm reaching out because after loads of searches on google and yelling at my filter, I'm exhausted with trying. Now, I just bought a brand new Fx5 and hooked it up just as the instructions state..

What's happening is, the cycle will begin and intake/output fine but after a min or two it begins to stutter like there's air in the canister and the output nozzle will rattle/cease to output. The canister will catch up and it'll work fine again but then suddenly water erupts out from the lid!!! I don't know what to do! I have a carpet that seems like a slip 'n slide now!

Help?

Thanks for the quick reply! Really appreciate it. As for this rubber piece..? I'm looking at the bottom of the lid, I don't see anything rubber..and nothing in the box that I could've forgotten?

There should be a large rubber seal that goes around the bottom of the lid. Pull the media baskets out and check in the filter, because it can fall off.

Yeah clockwork is right. There is supposed to be a rubber gasket to seal the lid.

The filter is actually supposed to shut off 2 minutes after you plug it in to purge air. It starts back up in a few minutes. It will also do that once every 24 hours for the same reason.

I see the rubber seals around the bottoms of the media baskets but nothing under the lid! Hm! It's no where to be found either!! Would you happen to know the dimensions/if I could get this at Walmart right now?

EDIT:

I scavenged a rubber seal from an old Fluval 404 and wrapped it around the larged rim on the bottom of the lid, will this work?

Under the media baskets? I don't remember seals being there? It might have fallen off and settled at the bottom of the filter. Is it a large black rubber seal in a circle shape? That is what you're looking for.

I believe this lid is actually broken, but if you look around the outer edge of the bottom you should be able to see the black rubber piece.

Nah, it's not anywhere, I've disassmbled the canister and can't find it anywhere.. It's ok, I am about to try this rubber band from the Fluval 404, I have it positioned exactly like the one above.. I just hope this has enough thickness or whatever to hold the job! I'll get back to you here shortly!

Thank you!

EDIT:

So the rubber band thing worked!!! It expelled all the air successfully without any spillage! My conclusion is that the LFS had this sitting up on the shelf for awhile and I noticed the box had been opened.. I just didn't think much of it after I opened it and saw everything nice and neat. I guess he/she must've ganked the rubber band for something else! Whatever.

Thank you all for the looks and replies, it's very much appreciated!

You wanna know how I knew this was likely the problem...

I went over to a local MFKers house and when I get there I hear him swearing out in the garage where his tanks are. I go in there and he's messing with his FX5 and informs me it's leaking after he cleaned it. I tell him he probably put it back together wrong, but he gives me a look like "I have five of these things and have been doing the big tank thing a lot longer than you."
So, we open it up and I find that seal on the bottom of the filter. We pop it back on and it works perfectly. :D

Glad your filter is working! Enjoy it.
