So I stopped using the blue filter pads in my top tray and switched to the fluval prefilter. The bottom 2 trays are still biomax. My problem is that it has seemed to reduce my biofiltration. I seem to have an increase in nitrite in my tank. Does anyone know if I should be closing the output a little to slow water flow? Would this help?

Just give it time for the bacteria to get established in the new media...

I've never had issues after changing the filter pads. I've always replaced all 3 at once and nitrites were always good. I was just wondering with switching to prefilter my output increased would this cause any problems with it

have you added any new fish, increased feeding? im not sure if closing the output a bit would put a strain on the pump....

No changes in feeding or fish stock. There is no problem with cutting the output back on a fx5. This is the only change I've made. Have no issues with ammonia just an increase in nitrites.
