I just got my FX5 and converted it to vinyl hosing. One end is attached to the valve and clamped. The other end is connected to the built in center overflow via PVC piping. Here's the million dollar question: Does the pvc/vinyl connection have to be clamped or clamped and glued?. If so, do I glue using PVC cement (Oatey) or aquarium silicone or a mixture of both?

Better way would be to go from a threaded female pvc union to a male X barbed brass fitting. Screw the brass fitting into the pvc union using thread seal tape and slide the vinyl (reinforced I hope?!!) hose over the barbed fitting and secure it with a hose clamp.

I did look at this site before hand and I have all the parts, it's just a matter of the best way of securing connections.

Not exactly sure of your set up but if your overflow has pvc pipe then glue your barbed fitting to that then clamp the vinyl tube to the pipe

Here are the pics:

I want to know what's the best way of securing the pvc with the hose in the last pic. (pvc cement/aquarium sealant/clamp/mix of these methods?)

Holy crap. What happend to that union fitting? It serves no purpose now.

the former owner had a leak when he first used it and then sealed it up. After he glued it up, there were no leaks and was working perfectly for the last 3 years so it's fine.

JRay152, I am contemplating modding my FX5 to your design but I'm nervous and afraid that I'll ruin it.
