I am running a 75 gallon with a FX5. Currently it contains the standard sponges and is filled with biomax only. I do not have anything else in it. My tank has recently started collecting algae and I can see tiny pieces of debris in the water. I was thinking of adding the blue filter pad but was wondering how long I can go without removing/cleaning it. Right now I can go 3 months without having to open it. I have used the white filter pad but know that most people do not use that one and if they do it is only for so long.

So thoughts on how long between cleaning on the blue pads, and also where to place it (top draw or bottom draw) is really appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I would buy some of the bio foam that comes in the FX6 and put 2 in the top tray.

I always keep at least one or two blue pads in my FX5's. I can go about 2 months without micro bubbles showing up in the 180, which has a heavier bio-load and 2 FX5's. The 120 also has 2 FX5's, and it almost never micro-bubbles on me.
