I decided to post this, not as absolute gospel but it worked for me:

I have been having trouble with micro bubbles coming from my fx5 for about a month now and i was getting reaally frustrated, i tried many pieces of advise from the mfk forums but to no avail, so 9 days ago i was carring out my normal w/c regime plus my bi-weekly filter maintainance, i stripped the filter down, cleaned all the sponges as normal, put it back under the tank, connected it up and turned it on !!!!, "WOAH WHAT THE HELL", there was huge bubbles coming out from my intake strainer and outlet nozzle.
On inspection i had connected the intake and outlet pipes the wrong way round and it had loads of crud coming out of the intake therefore it must have losened up the crud by backflushing it.
Anyway i connected the pipes the right way afterwards and `hey presto` no more micro bubbles, nore has their been since, also the flow rate has improved and its alot quieter, so to all the people having probs with their fx5 give it a go, what have ya got lose. :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

ummmm...... I understand what I read, but don't understand.....why.

I dont understand it either but all i know is i had micro bubbles coming out of the outlet nozzle and tried everything i could to resolve it i.e clean the filter regularly, no fine filter pads in the baskets ect, nothing worked then i accidently connected the inlet pipe to the outlet bit ( sorry dont know what to call it ) on top of the canister and vice-versa, let it run for the initial two minutes until i had figured out what i had done wrong, but during that time all this brown sludge stuff came out of the outlet strainer:screwy:, when connected back the right way it was cured ( no more bubbles ).
All i can conclude is the reverse flow through the pipes has cleaned them out, maybe the dirty pipes had been causing the microbubbles, i dont know !!!, all i know is after everything i have tried i am releaved at have a perfect filter again and now i can relax :headbang2, ill definately be doing this again next time i clean my filter,
Regards.

Wouldn't be a bad thing to do that's for sure. Do you think the junk that blew out of the intake strainer enough to reduce the inner diameter of the tubing possibly?

generally the microbubbles problem happens when people fisrt buy the filter and put in those fine filtration pads or pack it too tightly and impede the waterflow (the filter sucks air in from somewhere due to the lack of waterflow)...

Anyways that would explain why you had microbubbles as your pipes were blocked up... but if youre a new fx5 user then just make sure you dont have the unit too tightly packed with media and especially dont use their fine filtration pad accesories inside the trays as they are the biggest culprit

The impeller actually cavitates and degases the water, stripping oxygen, co2 and other dissolved gases from the water.

cheers for that... couldnt figure it out for ages... tried pretty much everything... but that explanation makes perfect sense now ;)

Anyways moral of the story is that you musnt put those fine filter pads in with the filter or impede the airflow.... if you do youll get microbubbles... if you dont youll have one of the best cannister filters youve ever owned.
