My night for questions??? With the FX5 if you add the blue and white polishing pads how long would you say you can go between cleanings? Fairly heavy load with other filters.

A week.....

Now is it the Blue or white pad that gumm up? I hate to have to clean one a week but I like the polishing it provides. Would you say allowing to go over that cleaning period could cause damage to the filter or just reduced flow?

With a heavy load of fish, both would clog easy. Add media to all three trays and keep up with water changes and call it a day.

It's the white pad that clogs easily. It does a great polishing job mind you....I've had friends describe my tank as "high def" when using one.

I have a relatively low bioload on this tank, but I only cleaned it once per month. It may be more frequent for others.

How about any other offbrands or media that I could try that might do the job and yet maybe allow me a little more time without a cleaning. I hate to have the hole in the middle without some sort of Mechnical catching the c???.

Plastic pot scurbbies.

Those things clog way too quickly IMO. I added an $80 Magnum 350 for polishing to great effect. It's easier to maintain than the ~70 pound FX5 and better at polishing too.

I've never bothered with the polishing pads. I replaced all the basket foam (the foam which slots in the baskets) with 30ppi foam. Water clarify is great and doesn't affect the flow rate.
