Pretty self-explanatory I suppose. Currently I've just got matrix in all 3 baskets (actually I might have scrubbies in one?) and I want to add some floss to help with mech. I will probably just add a layer of floss and leave biomedia in the basket too, rather than filling an entire basket with floss, which seems like overkill.

Wow, nobody? I'm leaning toward the top basket since the pump is in the bottom, so I don't get loose fibers in it. Also it would be easier to change out without having to screw with all 3 baskets, but I'd love some input before I do.

Yes, mech should go before your bio media so it can get most of the bigger pieces of waste before it gets to your bio media.

leave your current setup, the floss might reduce your flow in the long run, get an extra filter if you need more mech

That's true, but I think I should be good. I have a small sump, and I'll stick any biomedia I end up taking out in the sump...it's got a 650gph pump on it (probably actually closer to 500gph) and the tank is 170G. Either way I'll do some testing and see if the cycle's effected with & without the floss in there.

If you have the 3 filter pads in it, you should be fine. If you want to add floss, you're gonna have to clean the pads and floss every month or two. I am currently using 1 bue filter pad and 1 floss on my fx5.

Good question. If your only going to use one of the baskets for floss or filter pad, then I would think you would use it on the top of the first basket that has bio media in it to filter out larger particles. I know the instuctions say the last basket at thats where hagen reccomend you put the bio media after the first basket for waste of space pre filter noodles, second basket for chemical fitration media.

You will likely not make it a month with floss in the fx5. I added it to mine (middle basket) and after a week, flow was like nothing. The floss had blocked all of the gridded holes and prevented water from moving through the filter.

I don't have any pads in it now, just the foam side blocks, in the baskets its just seachem matrix in bags and a bunch of scrubbies.

Hmm I hadn't thought of that. So I'd probably be better off with a filter pad rather than the floss? I don't mind cracking it open and changing it but picking floss fibers out of the thing sounds like a serious chore.
