I found a used FX5 for $100, seems like a good deal, especially if it has media, not sure yet.

Wondering if I need to worry about taking it from a salt reef and switching it to my freshwater tank?

Am I right in thinking I should be able to rinse it out and hook it back up with out ruining the benifitial bacteria? Or should I give it a good clean and start fresh?

Clean it out 1st.

I would make sure it's well rinsed and if it were me would probably get new media for it. You never know what harmful things are lurking in a filter from a tank you aren't familiar with.

the bb from salt to fresh water is different its best to clean or throw out media from a new source if you want to clean media you can use 1:10 parts bleach and rinse very well or microwave what wont melt

clean the heck out of it.. let it dry out.. then clean it again...
leave the filters you have now running and add the fx5... let them run together till the BB get established in the fx5.. then if you want you can take down yer old filtration.. .or just leave them running together..

Ok thanks
well it's got bio balls for media and 3 hour round trip drive for me so not sure if it's worth it now. I wouldn't want to run it with bio balls so I'm thinking pass.

Yeah I bought it!
His friend is going to drive it half way my direction so that was the deciding factor.
I'm happy. He say's it's 6 months old and hasn't had any issues, "knock on wood".
:headbang2

I'm probally going to put the bio rings from my 2 ac110's in the top basket and fill the other 2 with Eheim sub Pro media.
