My fx5 makes a gargling sound when it runs... its not all the time but say every 2 mins i can hear what sound like air inside. So i unplug it and the think does have massive amount of air inside it... why does this happen? Does this filter make alot of air inside? O.o i never had this problem with my 303... i dont know how the air gets inside this filter. Im still running stock line on the filter. and its just cut in half.

Try opening and closing the return valve to the tank. Sometimes this helps.

According to Hagen UK, it can be caused by having too much media / media too tightly packed. I've had two problems with my two FX5's but I have to give them credit, they respond quickly and in detail to any concerns/complaints. I think they clearly still have some way to go on their "self-priming" and voiding of air. Especially as it appears Eheim have just raised the bar again with the new XL filters above the 2080.

Which filters are you referencing?

U know what... i just looked inside... and i put non fx5 stuff.. lol 3 bags of aqua stuff... lol i just remember this... im going to get the right stuff that should go inside... i didnt have thos polising pads so i made some out of jap maps. but came out blocky.

I wouldnt put the polishing pads in...They clog quickly and are annoying. Just go with a bunch of Bio media, some pre filter, and maybe some purigen.

I have mine filled with Eheim EhfiMech from top to bottom. I also use a Blue pad in between the bottom 2 baskets.

I just got one, and set it up last night. No fish in my 220g tank (yet) ... but geez, I LOVE THE FILTER! Setup was easy - it's BIG, like a small shopvac! I've been a fan of Fluval for a while now ... I have three 405s and one 305.

But to be sure I wasn't missing anything regarding everyone's hype with Eheim, I bought one other those this weekend also. Yes! It's QUIET! Totally noise-less! WOW. But I have to say, it's way more tricky to setup and the whole media thing created a mess. But yes, it's good, real good - a work horse of a filter. But I still say, for "civilian use" - Fluval is good too and shouldn't be poo poo'd they way some Eheim fans do. There's room in my tank room for both!

:)

Ok so it cant be the Ppads cuz i took a look inside and the are still clean. No clugging. So What about he hose line? Should i make a more straight shot to the in and out. i kinda have it turning back from one side... O.o heh i need a drain house anyways :X Ive been told to raise my Fx5 about as high off the ground as i can inside my stand. Cuz the higher it can go and the shorter the piping the more flow i can get out of it... plus ground level isnt working for draining cuz i allways seem to spill a little water out. (The stuff that doesnt flow out from the drain line)
