im wondering if i can remove the baskets in my fx5's and just fill the space with media and top off with floss?.
i dont plan on anything but bio rings would this increase my flow rate .
goal im after is my outlet nozels are about 2 inchs above substrate (fine sand) and they blow cross corner to eachother works good for picking up the droppings and circulating them to the intakes. but id like a little more flow.

I don't think you would notice that much of an increase in flow rate. I'm not super knowledgeable on FX5s but with other canisters, it would actually impede the performance of the filter.

do a search on fx5 modifications, i've seen a few on removing the baskets to increase the area for bio-material, but not really gonna increase the flow rate, best way to increase flow on the fx5 is to remove the dual outlet nozel and just use a piece of pvc 90, removing the outer sponges helps flow, and also getting rid of the ribbed hose and replacing it with a smooth vinyl hose, just make sure it's stiff enough so it doesn't crimp going over the tank.

The Fx5 modification website is down but I Am working on rebuilding it and getting it running again.

Here are some pictures.

For the record, this modification had no impact on the total flow volume from the filter. Even after converting to vinyl tubing, the flow was still at around 600 GPH.

What this mod does do is allow you to use small particle filtration pads without them clogging in a month. You can go about 3-5 months.

When removing the baskets, the filter does not purge completely. I can't stick my finger on why but I think it has something to do with the smaller area where the air can collect which should produce more pressure forcing more air out but I can't say for sure. You have to cone the top of the lid more toward the center to allow the canister to purge 100%. Mine purges about 90% of the air and it does not effect its filtration nor does it create any noise.

If you are looking to use fine particle filtration pads, it may be better to buy a sheet of 20 ppi foam from the link in my sig, cut it to fit the outside of the baskets to replace the original sponges. This would be easier and more reliable.
