Hello,

I recently switched out my 405 with FX5 last month and everything was working great until 3 days ago. I was changing the water and noticed the flow was weak, so I just cleaned the blue polishing pad and nothing else. I plugged the filter and it turned on and everything and the flow was great, but the motor seem like it was grinding on something and was just LOUD. Yesterday around 10PM the filter turned off and I assume it was turning off for purging…. it didn’t turn back on for 10 minutes and I was like WTF. So I unplugged it and “knocked” the motor few times and plugged it back in and it turned on. Then after running it will make kind of like "cracking sound" and just turns off and this happens after 1 or 2 minutes. What is causing this? I still have AC110 and 305 running on the tank but I need this FX5 running. My tank is super over stocked and I’m worried about the ammonia and nitrite. Any help as to why the FX5 is turning off is greatly appreciated it.

I had this same problem the other day, without all the loud noises coming from the motor. I ended up taking the whole thing apart and rinsed the inside of the canister pretty thoroughly. After that it worked just fine. Do you have sand or a fine gravel as substrate in your tank?

i would have a look at the empellor and make sure you have the media and baskets sitting properly inside the cannister

Tanks is bare-bottom, I will go home later today and do good cleaning. I would have cleaned it last night but it was to late and I had to wakeup for work at 7AM.

You are aware that the FX5 will turn itself off after a few minutes when it has been started and will pause until it starts again by itself after a minute or so?
This is so that any air inside the filterbucket will be flushed out when it starts again.
This cycle will take place automatically once a day.

I have several FX5 and the only "cons" regarding this filter is in my wiew that some older batches of filters was supplied with a rotor that broke after some time. When the rotor was replaced with a new one the noise also disappered.

^^What he said.

I have 2 Fx5's and often times sand and a bit of muck gets caught somewhere and its best to remove all of the canisters and give that canister a good rinsing!
