I was shopping for a new filter and i was liking the fx5 because i have a 150 gallon currently but will be upgrading some time in the future. Anyone that has used it please give me your opinion on it. Thanks
I've been running a FX5 for some time now. It runs quietly and filters well.
I've seen people complain about micro bubbles and such, but I haven't had this issue to any significant degree. Just make sure that you fill the cannister up to the brim before you put the cover on it and don't over tighten the lid (make sure the pads absorb whatever water they can and top it off once they're saturated). With those two things in order, I've had no microbubble issues even with a water polishing pad installed.
Bio-filtration wise, the system I've been running the FX5 on has been stable for....... seems like an eternity.
If you can swing it, get some 20ppi or 30ppi Poret foam from www.swisstropicals.com and cut it to size for the foam blocks that go around the outside of the basket. I've been using this foam for a while and it's made a pretty significant difference in filter performance. I use the 20ppi foam on the bottom basket and the 30ppi foam on the middle and top baskets.
I've got all 3 baskets loaded with Substrat Pro (in mesh media bags). On occasion I'll put filter floss in the bottom basket to polish the water up a bit.
