I got a FX5 used with media but I'm thinking to change it. It came with bio - ball but I prefer ceramic rings. I want to add Purigen but not sure where. I'm thinking just under the blue pad. I'll appreciated any suggestions.

When I ran purgien in my fx5 I ran it in the middle just in a bag. I think seachem sells a bag for it separately. Cause any of the other bags out there will leak it out. The way I had it setup was filter sponge on the top, Purigen in the middle and the bio on the bottom. Hope this helps

Bio balls are more for wet drys, their not meant to be completely submerged. Any ceramic media will suffice or purigen. Although ceramic breaks down eventually (purigen isn't ceramic). I stick with API chem stars, they seem to be the best ime. I only use foam blocks and I put stars into the very top tray. More media you put in it the less flow/gph

Ok Thanks, I will rreplace the bio-balls. I will use Saechem Matrix Bio-media and some ceramic ring with the Purigen right in the middle under the blue sponge. 1 envelope of 100mL is OK though? What about Purigen in the Aquaclear 100? I'm thinking right after the sponge like in the picture
I set everything up on the FX5 (Bottom trade ceramic rings, middle and top trade Saechem Max bio-media and the Purigen under the blue pad) it's running for a day and I notice the water more clear and the fish are swimming more. I'm going to take water parameter this weekend after gravel vacuuming and water change. I'm excited to see the tank is getting better.

my stack up from top to bottom goes, blue pad, poly fill in the first tray. purigen and a small bag of carbon in the second tray. seachem matrix in the third tray. that equals crystal clear water.
